About this course
Best on a desktop or laptop. This course isn't recommended on mobile. The workbooks are built for a larger screen, and you'll have a better experience completing them on a computer.
Basic Training follows the highs and lows of a season: what last year actually earned, what you need to pay yourself, what you're working toward, and how to hold a crew together through it.
Why Zebulon built Basic Training
Two things we know to be true:

1. A rising tide floats all boats.
2. Most financial training is for businesses that sell static stuff all year-round (which outfitters don't do).

So, we're giving industry-specific business education to seasonal outdoor adventure businesses. It's that simple.
What you walk away with
✦
A restructured chart of accounts
✦
A clear year-end picture
✦
A number for your own pay
✦
A spend list you've actually cut
✦
Pricing built on real needs
✦
Financial targets for next season
✦
A stronger team culture
We recommend spending about an hour per module. The workbooks are only worth what you put into them, so bring your real numbers.
A NOTE ABOUT YOUR NUMBERS: THEY STAY YOURS
Basic Training asks you to use sensitive figures. Everything you type into a workbook is saved on your device, in this browser. It never reaches Zebulon. The flip side: clear your browser or switch computers and your work is gone, so download your work from each module to save for your records. Downloads are generated only on your device, not ours.
The only data we'll gather is a name and email address before you start your first workbook, which we use for course updates and our Zebulon newsletter. No spam, ever. Unsubscribe at any time.

Outfit Owners
  • Who are you spending your time with, and what gets you out of bed?
  • If you didn't have to be involved in day-to-day operations, how would you spend your time?
  • What big, audacious milestones do you crave? Time with kids, purchases, sales?
  • Which rivers are you running, which roadtrips are you taking? How will you know you've arrived?
Outfit Managers & Leaders
  • What (or who) is your personal North Star? What motivation keeps you going when clients get cranky and hours get long?
  • What bucket-list places do you want to visit? What experiences do you want to have? Any rivers you want to run, National Parks you've yet to visit, friends you want to reconnect with?
  • Do you want to start or grow a family? Go back to school? Spend a full winter in Costa Rica?
  • Think about what brings you joy, then think bigger. The sky's the limit!

A tip from Zebulon
The Multi-Vision works best as a team sport. Invite your managers and key staff to take Basic Training too, then compare your visions side by side.

This module has you pull a transaction report from your bookkeeping software to rank your vendors from biggest to smallest: what's necessary, negotiable, or nix-worthy. By doing so, you may uncover significant savings - and start building a stronger budget for next season.

A tip from Zebulon
Don't chase every $40 subscription. Your top handful of vendors is usually 90% of the spend, so get those three answers right and the rest is rounding.
A Tale of Two COAs:
{{ savedLabel }}
Your Chart of Accounts (COA) decides what questions your books can answer. The structure that QuickBooks hands you (below, on the left) simply can't capture the realities of a seasonal operator.

Use our restructured COA (below, on the right) to build an accurate snapshot of your real business spend.

A NOTE FROM ZEBULON:
Most owners set their pay by whatever's left over. That makes your household the last creditor the business pays, and hides the real cost of running a business. Your personal budget is a business number: it sets the floor for your pay, which sets the minimum profit needed, which sets ballpark revenue. Pay yourself first, and the business has a target it can be held to. Skip yourself like always, and find out what your life really costs, one surprise at a time.

A tip from Zebulon
Fill this out with whoever shares the bank account with you. The number you come up with alone is almost always low, and the gap shows up in the business, not the household.

A NOTE FROM ZEBULON:
Gross profit is the money left after the cost of delivering the activity or thing you sold. It pays for everything else: your staff, your building, your pay, your growth. You cannot see it at the company level alone. Two activities can post the same revenue while one funds the season and the other eats away at it. Build the trip first, then add up the year.

A tip from Zebulon
Run the cost lines on your busiest trip first. It sets the pattern for the rest, and it is the one where a $12 change per trip is worth real money by October.

A NOTE FROM ZEBULON:
Bonuses, food, training, uniforms, and the taxes that ride along with payroll are not willy-nilly spend during and after season. They are an investment, and the business can manage its investment before the season starts. Gross profit less overhead, less the profit you need to keep, that has nothing to do with people, it is what you have to work with. Invest it wisely.

A profitable season can still run out of money. Profit is earned over a year; but cash is spent on a Tuesday. This module helps you anticipate the thin months before you're standing in one.

A NOTE FROM ZEBULON:
Eight modules of work land here. This one puts the season you said you wanted next to the season you just built, and tells you where the two disagree. Where a line no longer serves the target, the module that set it is one click away.

A NOTE FROM ZEBULON:
Needs-based pricing looks past the profit and loss to what your employees, your family, and your business actually need, and charges for it. Most people get sticker shock before they adopt what prices we recommend, then thank us later when their profitability substantially increases.

A NOTE FROM ZEBULON:
Module 11 (Employee Engagement Surveys) gave you data on your performance as management. This module gives you data on individual employee performance, in areas a tactical-heavy industry rarely thinks to measure. Pinpoint your high performers, and separate the wheat from the chaff.
